Why did I do it? – My adventure with Windows 7

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

3 days ago there was a knock at the door. I looked through the gate of my front door and saw to my surprise my old love. She had some work done to her I could tell. She looked good, a little too good. I opened the door. I knew I had to maintain my cool and not let her see that I noticed her sleek new look. “Hey there” I said.

An Open Letter to AT&T about all this iPhone WWDC hoopla.

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Dear At&t,

I’ve been using your service since the iPhone came out and I gotta say it’s not terrible. I was a Verizon customer that paid to get out of his contract to switch to you and I was worried. I had heard nothing but horror stories. But it isn’t that bad. You aren’t the best at getting great reception indoors. Your customer service leaves a lot to be desired. But I don’t mind paying you for use of the most amazing phone on the market. So what I don’t get is why are you so hell bent on pissing off your customers. I can’t imagine you want to be this bad of a company. I’m sure you know what your customers want when it comes to the iPhone. If not let me tell you. We want to use EVERY FEATURE that phone has to offer at a reasonable price.

Why does Apple tell me I can stick 2 video cards in my system if they won’t work.

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

I mean… they work… but not really. I’ll explain.

Last year I got a Mac Pro 2.8ghz 8core. It’s awesome. When I was looking into alternatives to buying a MojoDX from Avid for a preview monitor it donned on me that Apple gives you the option to put more than one video card in your system. I “need” to have 2 monitors for my edit suite so 1 card wouldn’t be enough. So I got 2 Nvidia 8800gts and slapped them in. Everything was wine and roses. Running Avid is great with a big 46″ Sony LCD as your preview monitor. Also to be able to do HD projects and have a real time preview that stays in perfect sync for only an extra $275 is great. Here comes the best part… it works in Final Cut Pro too. So BAM! I can do a project for anyone asking for either and I did. I did 3 projects, 2 in Avid and 1 in Final Cut Pro and my clients were happy and impressed.

Guilty until proven innocent OR Life in the digital download age

Monday, December 31st, 2007

So I woke up today in the mood to buy music. There were a couple albums that I had wanted for a while, the new(er) Arctic Monkeys album and They Might Be Giants’ Flood. Regardless of what you think of my musical tastes you will probably agree that it is just easier to open up iTunes and buy, download and enjoy the music you want in a click. I’ve only bought 2 or 3 albums and a few singles over the years off of iTunes MOSTLY because I don’t like AAC 128. When I rip a CD it’s MP3 320 or bust. So though I am not an elitist “everything must be Apple Lossless or even better Uncompressed” person. I rip discs at a rate that I can’t tell is compressed. I admit it, my ears really can’t tell the difference on the average song. Now that you understand my needs, you’ll understand why I decided to give AmazonMp3.com a try. MP3 256vbr with no DRM. That is music to my ears, and more importantly to my wallet. So I went on their site and got the albums and they sounded great and it was easy to buy them and their selection is vast and… one of the songs was wrong. The reason I wanted They Might Be Giants’ Flood was in a large part for Birdhouse in Your Soul. I went to play it and though it was labeled correctly (down to the AmazonMp3.com Song Serial Number) it wasn’t the song. It was a strange sensation, kinda like drinking from a glass you thought had soda in it but you got milk.
